A medical assistant can become an MRI technologist in 12–18 months through an ARMRIT-accredited program without first becoming an X-ray tech. Many applicants already work in imaging; many others are MAs, PCTs, or CNAs. You still have to learn the magnet. Clinic skills do not replace that.

What transfers from the clinic, and what does not
These transfer: blood pressure and pulse checks, rooming, explaining a procedure in plain language, calming someone who does not want to be there, HIPAA, EHR clicks, and the rhythm of a full schedule. MRI techs do all of that between sequences.
Clinic MAs also already know what a no-show does to a list. MRI departments live on that same math. Showing up early and turning a room without being asked is not a soft skill in imaging. It is how you get a second clinical day.
These do not: pulse sequences, coil choice, implant screening at a magnet, contrast reaction drills, or image critique. Dental X-rays and clinic fluoro, if you have them, also do not count as MRI clinical hours.
