What TMB actually said about MRI-only practice
FAQ 58 is titled for people who completed an MR program and hold ARRT certification in MR only. The Board’s answer is “No” — a radiologic technologist license is not required to practice MR in Texas at this time. The same answer says that if your employer requires an MRT license, you must meet TAC Chapter 186, Subchapter B.
That is a sharper statement than most school blogs print. It also means two people can both be right: you can scan MRI in Texas without an MRT number, and you can still lose a job offer because a hospital printed “TMB registered” on the requisition. TeslaMR names Memorial Hermann and HCA Medical City on the Texas programs page as employers in the market. That is not a claim about each campus’s current HR screen.
Do not use FAQ 58 as permission to skip a national credential. Texas employers still hire from ARRT(MR) or ARMRIT postings. TeslaMR’s ARMRIT hiring page lists systems that have posted “ARRT(MR) or ARMRIT.”

TAC §186.12 GMRT qualifiers, reviewed against the live rule in August 2026, are:

ARMRIT is not listed. ARRT(MR)-only is also not listed as a GMRT qualifier. Do not tell an HR coordinator that those two national MRI cards both qualify a GMRT application.
TMB’s General Medical Radiologic Technologist pages, reviewed in August 2026, tell applicants to:
- Read the MRT documentation checklist and eligibility PDF before applying.
- Apply online at the TMB MRT portal.
- Pass the Jurisprudence exam (required for MRT applicants who apply after August 31, 2019, under SB 202).
- Submit fingerprints after the online application, not before. Fingerprinting is through IdentoGo by IDEMIA. Results go to TMB from Texas DPS and the FBI. This is not a DPS walk-in. You pay IdentoGo separately. Do not mail cards to TMB.
Third-party documents often have to come straight from the school or the registry. Use a real email. TMB says that is how they send the supplemental-document list.
